Making Connections promotes college enrollment and offers career explorations in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM fields). We encourage students to pursue opportunities in higher education through hands-on workshops, mentoring, parental involvement, and regular high school visits.
THE MENTOR program is designed to ignite high school girls’ interests in
higher education. They provide a support system that can inform Making
Connections students about various career interests and how they can achieve them. As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to empower a first generation college student and make a positive influence in their lives.
Making Connections seeks individuals who will:
• dedicate 4-6 hours a month toward building a relationship with their mentee,
• offer support, advice, and guidance to their mentee while they explore higher education, apply for college, and gain knowledge about the STEM fields,
• assist their mentee with career exploration through job shadows and sharing work experiences, and
• support and motivate their mentee towards success in achieving their aspirations.
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?
Mentors are expected to:
• Attend a mandatory mentor orientation and training
• Engage in 4-6 hours per month of interpersonal communication with your mentee (in-person meetings, phone, and e-mail contact)
• Attend monthly mentor-mentee socials with your mentee as well as other Making Connections workshops and activities
• Provide monthly updates to program staff
